Biodiversity has been defined in Convention on Biological Diversity as ‘The variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.’ In simpler words, it is variety among all the biological factors. Diversity exists in the food plate we eat from, in the water, we drink and to the air, we breathe! Our daily meal of grains, millets, vegetables, and fruits represents ‘diversity on a plate’. The combinations of grains, pulses, millets, vegetables, and fruits provide us the carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, vitamins, and minerals essential for a healthy living. Understanding this connection between our food diversity and health is of paramount importance, to preserve and biodiversity.
