The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is a premier research organization working in energy issues and sustainable development.
We developed a first of its kind Cloud based open source web GIS solution to calculate potential solar radiation on rooftops of buildings for TERI. The application was designed to support basic navigation tools along with core tools such as Identify, Query features, Calculate Potential Solar Radiation besides others and was used in estimating potential of buildings in Chandigarh, the Solar City.
The user friendly Solar Radiation tool for Single Selection calculates the potential solar radiation for a building based on the selection made by the user. The user can select a building and obtain the graph of the estimated radiation instantly.
We estimated the potential for rooftop solar energy generation by conducting a geo-spatial survey of more than 40000 buildings as well as a solar radiation survey of more than 10000 buildings using solar meter.
The comprehensive survey report included all the details of the building such as the owner’s name, plinth area, geographical coordinates and address.
